Versailles

Louis XIV is 28 years old. To bring the nobility under his thumb and impose once and for all his absolute power, he undertakes the construction of the Versailles palace. Like the laying of a trap. Louis XIV is a young king haunted by a childhood trauma, “La Fronde”, a revolt of the nobility against his father, Louis XIII…

Peerless political strategist, manipulator, Machiavellian, he would “invent” Versailles to distance the Nobles from Paris, keep them under his control, and gradually turn Versailles into a gilded cage. Yet he is also a man of passionate romances. But how, as the world’s greatest king, can he live them to the full?

Season one sees the young king mature into the Sun King, the king of kings. By way of historical and fictional characters, from the latest courtesan in favour to the humblest village peasant, we are guided through a world of betrayals and court secrets, political manoeuvres and declarations of war, revealing Versailles in all its glory and brutality.
